Question by the one with a snorkel: (In Australia) Can you just walk in and buy an MA15+ dvd?
Do you need to show an id or or something? I’m 13, but tall for my age. Interested to know. Please help?
I’m in Australia if that changes anything.
(the movie is MA for violence)

Whether they have to ask for ID (legally) and whether someone will actually ask for ID are two different things. I’ve never seen signs at stores saying they ID for certain rated movies like they do with cigarettes or alcohol. As far as I know, ratings are just guides set by some board so people can decide what they want to watch. I don’t think it’s actually illegal for someone under 15 to watch a 15+. And anyway, I’m pretty sure the casual employee (who’s probably barely over 15 him/herself) working at the local video store is not going to care about your ID.

Legally, as MA15+ prohibits sale to persons ages 15 or less unless in the company of a guardian, you’re out luck. You could always ask your parents/guardians or even an older relative or a friend to accompany you when you purchase it.
However, some stores don’t always ask for id (same goes with alcohol and cigarettes – I had friends who bought those on a regular basis while underage). I would often say when wanting to rent an MA movie that I was 15 so I didn’t have any id – that tended to work (however I’m not in anyway encouraging you to do the same!).
Although you won’t realise it at 13, the ratings are in place for a reason – it would hurt to wait another 2 years!
